.hack//SIGN
Year: 2002
Synopsis: Players of an online game called The World are transported inside. If you die in the game you die in real life…
EMN Notes: So, the anime doesn’t really seem to follow the games, focusing instead on a new party of characters and the secrets behind The World. .hack was once a pretty huge media franchise, and it really started the whole trapped-in-an-online-game craze that would later be used by SAO. Perhaps by virtue of feeling more fresh or just by being a multimedia experience from the getgo I always appreciated the series. The games were great, though I never played past the second one, and the anime is pretty good too.
Adventure Time
Year: 2010
Synopsis: Jake The Dog and Finn The Human have fantastical adventures in a strange post-apocalyptic world.
EMN Notes: Sheesh, what can I say about Adventure Time? Everyone who knows knows it’s a masterful piece of work, one that shone from the moment the pilot episode was released online. It’s wonderfully imaginative, extremely funny, strange and artistic, and has a lot of deep and meaningful messages to boot. The characters are all memorale, colorful, and quotable, and yet at the center of it all beats a heart that tells tales of sorrow and joy. I don’t think there’s ever been a show with quite this imagination and I don’t know if there ever will be again.
Akudama Drive
Year: 2020
Synopsis: In a dystopian future, society is made up of Swindlers and Hoodlums who look to enact their own brand of justice outside of the law.
EMN Notes: Before adding this all we knew was that it was by the company that was Kodaka and Uchikoshi started. From what I’ve seen it is a really interesting and stylish series set in a cyberpunk world. Also, every episode is named after a movie, which is both unique and fun. There’s something neat about seeing episodes called “THE SHINING” and “MISSION IMPOSSIBLE”.
Ancient Books of Ys
Year: 1989
Synopsis: The young adventurer Adol Christin sets out to Darm Tower to collect the books telling the story of the lost kingdom of Ys.
EMN Notes: The Ys games are all a lot of fun, and Mandy especially is really fond of them. These OVA adaptations of the first two are also really fun, very of-the-time as a fantasy series with bright lights for magical effects and a great art style that has aged well. It’s a very classic fantasy OVA, but being based on some Turbografx games gives it a bit of an edge. I just think it’s neat!
